Below is a listing of five tiles from the modern period.

1. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, New System of the Nature of Substances and their Communication, and of the Union which Exists between the Soul and the Body, There is no interaction between souls and bodies. They inhabit two qualitatively separate worlds, and what we think of as "interactions" between minds and bodies are actually perfectly timed coincidences between the two worlds.

2. John Locke, Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Denotes that in order for us to understand, and learn something meaningful, we must understand ``understanding''

3. David Hume, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, partially dumps the theories, and previous inquiries on metaphysics, as it has not been a ``true and proper science'' Attempts to reform philosophy towards a more science base.

4. Immanuel Kant, Critique of Pure Reason, Kant attempts to salvage both rationalism and empiricism by putting each in context. This divides all knowledge into sensory knowledge and intellectual knowledge.

5. Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan, a political work where he describes the various ``states'' of man and rise to government.
